The Consumer: New Weight Watchers Plan Leaves Some Grumbling

When Janet Holwell first joined Weight Watchers seven years ago, she lost 43 pounds in one year and considered the popular commercial weight-loss plan ?miraculous.?

?I felt like I had found the magic key, the secret that eluded me all of these years,? said Ms. Holwell, who has maintained most of her weight loss by continuing to adhere to the program.

But the magic disappeared when Weight Watchers overhauled its weight-loss plan little over a year ago. Under the new system, called Points Plus, Ms. Holwell, has not been able to lose the five pounds she recently gained.

?It just doesn?t work for me,? said Ms. Holwell, 61, a research consultant who attends weekly Weight Watchers meetings in Middle Village and Glendale, Queens.

Millions of people around the world belong to Weight Watchers International, ranked best commercial diet plan by U.S. News & World Report last year, and even nonmembers look to it for guidance and recommendations. It is best known for its points system, which assigns specific values to different foods and permits each member a daily allotment. At its weekly group meetings, healthy eating and exercise are emphasized over rapid-fire results.

The latest iteration of the weight-loss plan, called Points Plus, was intended to steer people toward more healthy food choices, encouraging people to eat more fresh fruits by giving them zero points, as most vegetables already were. But many longtime members who were familiar with the earlier plan, like Ms. Holwell, have been grumbling about slow weight loss under the revised plan.

?I have been doing Points Plus for about a month and keep gaining and losing the same few pounds,? a commenter at one weight-loss Web site complained shortly after the new plan was introduced. Others chimed in to reassure her she was not alone.

In December, in a move that seemed to acknowledge the difficulty many dieters were having with the new system, Weight Watchers recommended that all members consider reducing their daily food intake, or points allotment, by 10 percent, not counting fruits and vegetables. (For those who?ve missed a few meetings, that means most women might cut their daily Points Plus allotment to 26 per day, down from 29.)

Although Weight Watchers officials say the change in points allotments was optional ? that members could adjust their daily points up or down ? and insist that it was not a response to members? failure to lose weight, many longtime members unhappy with the newer plan say they feel vindicated. ?I think they miscalculated,? Ms. Holwell said.

Many members said they were not given a choice. ?One day we came in and they said there were changes, and suddenly I had 26 points,? said a member in New York City who asked that her name not be published to avoid alienating those in her group.

Company officials insist that the only reason Weight Watchers modified the plan was because they had become convinced members were getting more than adequate nourishment under the new plan and would not be harmed by eating less.

?We chose to be conservative when we introduced the plan, because we wanted to make sure that the things we stand for, nutritional health and well-being, weren?t going to be compromised,? said Karen Miller-Kovach, a registered dietitian who is chief scientific officer of Weight Watchers.

Still, she said the company had been following the progress of members who use online tracking tools and had found that dieters have been gaming the new system. ?People were having to circumvent the system in order to lose weight at a healthy rate,? she said.

Judy Weinstein, a Manhattan opera director in her 50s, has attended Weight Watchers meetings regularly for nearly eight years and is very committed to the program. But while she found it enormously helpful when she first joined, losing 33 pounds, she has had less success with Points Plus.

So six months ago, she committed what was once the ultimate Weight Watchers no-no and cut her own points allotment. That Weight Watchers has now suggested this for all members, but as an option instead of providing clear guidance, disturbs her.

?That?s not really helpful,? Ms. Weinstein said. ?People wouldn?t be here if they could do it on their own.?

Fruit has been a particular conundrum for dieters on the new plan. As fresh fruit ?costs? zero points, dieters can have as much as they?d like, ?within reason,? Ms. Miller-Kovach said. Many members dislike the vagueness of this recommendation, since they tend to overeat when left to their own devices. But people who are overweight did not become fat because they binged on fresh fruit, said Elizabeth Josefsberg, who leads meetings in New York City.

?You know how it is with a cookie ? you want six cookies,? she said. ?When you finish a banana, you don?t say, ?Gosh, I want another banana.???

Other experts are less sanguine. ?No single dietitian I know would count fruit as a ?free? food if someone is on a diet and trying to lose weight. You have to account for it,? said Marjorie Nolan, a New York City dietitian who speaks on behalf of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She expressed surprise that even bananas (which used to cost two points under the previous Weight Watchers plan) are zero points.

?That just doesn?t make sense,? she said. ?They?re a denser fruit.?

But Dr. Jeffrey Mechanick, vice president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, said there was no evidence that indulging in fruit impedes weight loss.

The reason fruit and most vegetables are zero points is that the formula actually ?prepays? those points, Ms. Miller-Kovach said; the daily points allocation already includes an allowance for what the plan has determined is a typical daily consumption of fruits and vegetables. Ms. Miller-Kovach said she could not divulge the number of fruits and vegetables used in the calculation because the information is proprietary and not revealed even to participants.

But since average consumption of fruit is low in this country, usually not reaching the five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables a day recommended by government health experts, the prepayment may underestimate the effect of more liberal fruit consumption on waistlines.

Results of randomized clinical trials of the new Points Plus program have not been published in peer-reviewed journals. But two brief reports have been presented at scientific meetings on obesity, and the authors found no difference in weight loss between the old and new points plans.

In one of those studies, participants lost an average of 8.2 pounds over 12 weeks and saw significant improvements in their total cholesterol and triglyceride measures. But only 111 overweight adults completed the 12-week trial, and only 55 people were following the new Points Plus program.

Weight Watchers officials said the number of participants was sufficient to provide statistical proof that the new diet system works.

The new Points Plus plan also was evaluated in an earlier unpublished trial, Ms. Miller-Kovach said. And Weight Watchers has been following more than 12,000 members in Germany since the introduction of the new Points Plus program there. So far no differences in weight loss have been found between users of the new and old programs, she said.

The transition to a new system seems to have been traumatic for many members. Ms. Holwell is optimistic that the plan will work again for her but wonders now if it will need further revision.

?The jury is still out on the 26 points,? she said.

An earlier version of this post described the government's recommended daily amount of produce incorrectly. The five to nine daily servings involve fruit and vegetables, not just fruit.

Meta-analysis of the Differentially Expressed Colorectal Cancer ...

Abstract

The occurrence and development of colorectal cancer is a complex process of steps, phases and polygene. We did data preprocessing of the five microarray datasets of colorectal cancer that were from the public database (GEO) by bioinformatics tools in this article, Cancer Outlier Profile Analysis was used to select differentially expressed genes, and KEGG and GeneGO database were used to search the pathways which were related to the differentially expressed genes. With the GeneGO database, the rate which gene overlap is less than pathway overlap is 70%. 105 of the 262 pathways were confirmed to be related to colorectal cancer, and four pathways were shared in four datasets at least. 19.2 percent of genes in the (L)-selenoaminoacids incorporation in proteins during translation pathway was confirmed to be related to colorectal cancer. This pathway may be a new colorectal cancer-related pathway, but it needs further experimental testing. Through meta-analysis of microarray expression profilings at pathway level, we verified that the analysis at pathway level was more reproducible than that at gene level. And it is meaningful to understand the molecular mechanism of occurrence and development of colorectal cancer more better.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Glamour Boy is here and ready to play in Sunday's Super Bowl. Glamour wife is out of sight ? so far ? unless you count the front page of the New York Post.

Super model Gisele Bundchen landed the one cover she probably wasn't after, gracing the tabloid with her "Tommy" after the paper got hold of an email she reportedly sent to friends and family, asking them to channel their "positive energy" to quarterback husband Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the NFL title game against the New York Giants.

"This sunday will be a really important day in my husband's life. He and his team worked so hard to get to this point and now they need us more than ever to send them positive energy so they can fulfill their dream of winning this super bowl. ..." she wrote, according to the Post, which didn't say how it obtained the message. "I kindly ask all of you to join me on this positive chain and pray for him, so he can feel confident, healthy and strong. Envision him happy and fulfilled experiencing with his team a victory this sunday."

Bundchen was said to have confirmed it all with an email to the paper saying: "I am surprised that you received this email; it was a private note only sent to close friends and family."

Not exactly bulletin-board material, but darned close for a week that has been exceedingly dull by Super Bowl standards: no name-calling, fights or even a whiff of controversy..

A copy of the Post made the rounds at the Giants' media availability Thursday morning. Brady was asked about it, too, but no fireworks there:

"I don't know anything about that, so I don't know what it is."

Brady and Bundchen have taken great pains to try to be a normal couple ? well, as normal as one of America's most watched twosomes can be.

He's a three-time Super Bowl champ with two MVP awards and a $72 million contract. He's GQ worthy with rugged good looks and a flair for fashion, and his hair is a source of endless fascination. She's a long-locked Brazilian beauty who made her name with Victoria's Secret lingerie and now moves everything from shampoo to couture. She's the biggest name in modeling, racking up $45 million in 2011, according to the latest annual list by Forbes.com.

Brady was discovered in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft, Bundchen at age 14 in a Brazilian fashion mall.

They're the kind of high-wattage stars who keep the paparazzi in business. Yet they don't have a reality TV show and they don't do the party circuit, and she isn't likely to show up at Patriots games in a form-fitting pink Brady jersey.

They're almost ? dare we say it? ? boring.

He gave tiny glimpses of his family life in response to questions during Super Bowl week interviews.

He'll talk about his parents, three older sisters, and his two boys, one with an ex-girlfriend, one with Bundchen. He'll mention a child's chair with his youngest son's name on it on the floor of his locker in Foxborough, Mass., and remarked about his boys' favorite TV shows and athletic abilities.

But his wife? He seldom, if ever, mentioned her.

And never by name.

Asked at Tuesday's media day if his wife had given him any advice, he said: "Throw the ball quickly. She doesn't like it when I get hit very often. My guys up front do a great job of protecting me."

His wife, too.

"I feel Tommy really needs our prayer, our support and love at this time," her email said, according to the Post.

Stay tuned.

Japanese artist sculpts space with sound and light (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? A blindingly white room filled with a single wave of sound contrasts with a dark room that is pierced by a cone of light in the first German solo exhibition of Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda.

Ikeda, known for his electronic sound compositions and audiovisual installations, created the works specifically for the two vast symmetrical upper halls of Berlin's contemporary art museum, the Hamburger Bahnhof.

The exhibition's title "db" (decibel abbreviated) refers to this symmetry and to the polar opposites such as bright and dark, full and empty, that fascinate him and run throughout his artwork.

"You can't see music or touch the light, but it fills the whole space," he told Reuters in an interview. "I made the space extreme, to open you up."

Ikeda, 45, frequently explores how to sculpt space with sound and light in his work and talks of his "architectural" projects. In Paris and Barcelona, for example, he has projected clusters of light beams into the sky, like skyscrapers of luminosity.

Ikeda's installations appear minimalist, with the objects --a loudspeaker and a searchlight-- taking up only a fraction of the vast space. Each hall comprises 700 square meters.

Yet the artist calls them "maximalist" as the intense shows of light and sound fill and transform the entire space, blending out all else and engulfing the spectator.

"The big speaker emits just one tone but it fills the space and this sound seems to come from all directions," he said, referring to the white room. "As you move through the space, you create an oscillation in the sound, your own music."

Similarly, he said, the white light in the black room is very strong and "contains full information," namely all the colors in the spectrum.

SUBLIME INFINITY

Ikeda refuses to be photographed and rarely gives interviews, preferring to let his art speak for itself.

The artist, dressed in dark clothing and wearing thick, black-rimmed glasses, said this dislike of publicity could stem from his upbringing in Japan, where people are required to conform and to be self-effacing.

Ikeda said he does not want museum-goers to come to his works of art with preconceptions and seek to understand them rationally but to experience them emotionally.

"An exhibition should be like a concert, it is a live performance," said Ikeda, who now lives in Paris with his French wife and their child. "When you go to a concert, you don't ask about the meaning of Mozart, you enjoy the experience."

However, he said he included some "seeds for thought for the intellectual people which are very mathematical."

In the white room, irreducible numbers of more than one million digits each are written in tiny print on black canvases. In the black room, transcendental - infinite - numbers generated by real-time computer programs flicker on wall displays.

"The cutting edge of pure mathematics is truly amazing, the discussion is all about infinity," said Ikeda, who draws from mathematics in many of his works. "It's the most powerful concept around."

Of his projection of infinite numbers, he said: "You are watching something your brain cannot handle, it is sublime, beyond beautiful, you get scared."

"It's like the climax when Jimi Hendrix plays the guitar, I want to extend that climax for two months."

Ikeda, who dropped out of university, said he had now overcome his dislike of the establishment to visit mathematicians at the universities of Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge.

He said his decade touring with Japanese artist collective "Dumb Type" had taught him the craftwork involved in the arts, but mathematicians give him inspiration, and he now counts them among his closest friends.

"Mathematicians are so free, they are like poets."
