UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? A top U.N. official says an estimated 400 people additional people have died in the uprising against the Syria government since an Arab League mission arrived in the country to monitor the situation there.
U.N. political chief B. Lynn Pascoe provided those figures in a closed-door report to the 15-member council Tuesday, diplomats said.
U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said the rate was even higher than before the monitors arrived and a clear indication the Syrian government was stepping up the violence rather than ending it as promised.
A Security Council resolution threatening Syria with sanctions has stalled over objections from Russia and China.
The U.N. estimates some 5,000 people have been killed in the uprising so far.
