A couple of weeks ago, a blogger at Mother Earth News, Gwen Roland, posted an article?with some wonderful stories of rescued dogs and shared a great idea for a way pet lovers can help dogs in need: by starting a pet food pantry.
One such pet food pantry, Coco?s Cupboard, has helped save the lives of several dogs. Founder Charity Hurt started Coco?s Cupboard in honor of a faithful spaniel mix she rescued from a highway.?The dog?s elderly owner was struck and killed by a car, and for days the little dog continued to pace the busy road. During the rescue, Charity discovered that Coco also had a litter of pups.
With the help of friends and CARE, Inc., Charity found homes for all of the pups and took Coco into her own family. Then, with nothing more than word of mouth to gather donations, Charity began providing pet food and other supplies to low-income pet owners as well as compassionate people who rescue pets from the highway. Thus, the non-profit group Coco?s Cupboard was born, and it has been growing and helping more animals ever since.
Not everyone who rescues a pet or takes one in has the financial resources to buy pet food and other supplies, which is where a pet food pantry steps in to help.
